Hi everybody,
We – the 30 members of the English Club – had an amazing time in England. This year the trip was a bit different than the years before. We stayed in a beautiful hotel at the seaside in Hastings where our group spent the time together and learned in different groups. We started on Friday, 6th July and drove to Hastings over night but therefore we had to take the ferry from Dünkirchen to Dover.
On Saturday we had time to relax and to explore Hastings with its beautiful old town and seaside. We had to create a town rallye in our group and to begin our travel book with a collection of exercises, photos and personal notes. After dinner we played “Adventure Golf” at the beach. That was a lot of fun!
On Sunday the bus driver brought us to “Beachy Head” from where we started our hike to “Birling Gap”. We walked along the steep cliffs and had a breathtaking view all over the country one one side and on the other side over the ocean. At Birling Gap we had a typical British teatime: 5 o´clock Cream Tea with tasty homemade scones. After dinner we wrote texts about the day and prepared different funny sketches in groups (we did that at the beach).
Monday (after English lesson) we spent in Brighton. We had to deal with some different jobs e.g. to do the tasks in town Mrs. Hierholzer told us to do. After that we went shopping in groups others relaxed at the beach or spent their free time at the Pier where there were some roller coasters and gambling machines.
The day in London on Tuesday was totally fantastic. We took the clipper from Greenwich to London Eye and saw almost every famous sight you can imagine: Tower Bridge, the Tower, the HMS Belfast (an old war ship), two royal cruising yachts, the Shakespear Theatre, the Shard, London Eye and of course the Parliament (sadly the Big Ben tower was covered).
After taking a ride with the London Eye which took 30 minutes, we went through St. James Park to Buckingham Palace. The Queen wasn`t there but it was “100 years of Royal Air Force Day” so there was a huge parade and we saw the planes directly above our heads. Just brilliant! After that we took our bus to Camden Town where we had time to buy souvenirs, to eat something and to relax. It was a tiring but a very cool day out in London.
After breakfast on Wednesday we had English lessons to write our travel books, to do all the exercises and to play some games. At twelve o’clock we walked to the Fishermen`s museum – a small but beautiful museum full of information about fishing in the past even a big old ship. You learn a lot of the life and death of the early fishermen what is totally interesting because Hastings is famous for fishing. After that we had a nice and relaxing lunch picnic at the beach. Then we walked up the hill to Alexandra Park where we played games and had some leisure time until dinner at 6 pm.
At 7 pm we went to a nearby pub for watching the football match England – Croatia.
What an atmosphere! What a match! What a great evening!
Oh no – Thursday, our last hours in England.
We put all our luggage in the bus and set out for Canterbury where we spent two hours in town before we drove on to the harbour in Dover. Luckily there was almost no border control that we got our ferry to Dünkirchen very quickly. After 12 hours we were back to Gaggenau with great experience and short of sleep.
You should absolutely be a part of this trip next year!
